This leafy salad green is from the Venato region of Italy, my Momma’s home turf. It wasn't readily available on a worldwide scale before the 1990’s, even though it has grown in the Mediterranean area since Roman times. Back then, it was actually considered an aphrodisiac! (Must be all the vitamin C and iron that the plant is loaded with!) I think it might be an acquired taste, with it’s distinctively strong, peppery taste. But Oh! If you’re not quite ready for an entire salad bowl full of this kicky leaf, just throw a few leaves into a mixed green Spring salad to add real pizazz to the plate!

Saigon Cinnamon

A few years ago, I was treated to delicious home-baked Rugelach sufficiently laced with Saigon cinnamon, and I’ve never used another cinnamon since. Much like the Madagascar Vanilla, less is more and the flavor is absolutely unbelievable.

Madagascar Bourbon Pure Vanilla

This, I think, is the king of vanillas. I've always used pure vanilla, but this product takes an already great flavor to a whole new mind-blowing level. I generally buy the paste—I love the vanilla bean speckles and the thick texture and rich taste. It’s made from vanilla beans grown on the island of Madagascar and its creamy, sweet flavor blends beautifully with a variety of foods. You’ll find it in most kitchen and gourmet-ware stores. The product’s a bit pricey at $12 a bottle, but you’ll find that you need less and the flavor profile is greatly enhanced.

To slice a carrot safely, cut a small slice vertically from the carrot. The carrot will not roll as you cut it.

To soften cream cheese, remove cream cheese from box but keep aluminum wrapping on. Place in plastic or zip lock back and immerse in hot water for about 20-30 seconds.

This is my favorite “small cutting task” knife! In fact, I don’t know what I’d do without it. The fantastic German Knife company Messermeister calls it the Red Serrated Tomato Knife. It’s 4 ½ inches long and comes with it’s own shield. I’ve never found a better knife to slice through tomatoes, small fruit and even hard salami! This handy little knife is only about $8.00 and has always been one of my favorite stocking stuffer gift ideas!
